Patio Cover Roofs: Fabric or Living
Posted by GuestPoster in Home and Furnishings on January 28th, 2010
With the big push in creating more usable and outdoor living spaces, patio covers are providing some great functionality. When you have a structure like this in your space, it can give you an esthetic appeal as well as functional divisions and shade if covered. One dilemma with a patio cover structure like this is how do you cover it. If you take the pergola as the most common form of this structure, then you have several options.
With a pergola, you will typically have your stringers laying atop beams that are mounted in some way to the posts. If you have a more standard sized pergola, four posts provide enough support for the roof. Depending upon the spacing between these stringers, there is more or less sun penetration. You can provide a more substantial ‘roof like’ appearance by using some type of fabric or even plants. Patio awning fabrics can take the form vinyls or canvas, even burlap for a more organic look. If you like the idea of a more living structure, then you will prefer to grow vines or other climbing greenery for the posts and eventually roof of your pergola. If you have a covered patio that is an extension of your Ranch-style home, these options are much more limited.
Another idea is with using metal as a roofing material. There are a wide variety of styles to choose from and several metal choices as well. You can find them in steel, copper, bronze and aluminum. The patterns can vary from standing seams to shingles. In fact, custom bronze shingles are an amazingly gorgeous looking material. When they patina with age and the weather, you would be hard pressed to find something that looks as good. In addition to their appearance, metal roofs can last a very long time. Their durability is unmatched. Warranties on metal roofs are often much longer than those of traditional roofing materials. You can expect a metal patio roof to last anywhere from 30-60 years, if not longer. I doubt you’ll ever replace it, to be honest.

Choices Abound in the World of Small Coffee Makers

Chances are that if you clicked on this article you are one of the millions of people throughout the world that enjoys a cup of coffee. Regardless of the specific type of coffee you prefer, there are a variety of inexpensive small coffee makers that are capable of producing a consistently great cup of coffee each morning. For people that just want to sit back and let the machine do all the busy work, there are coffee makers that do it all by using coffee pods. The pods are essentially just sealed portions of ground coffee that are placed in a specialized machine. The machine pierces the lid of the pod, infuses the grounds with heated water and dispenses coffee into your cup. Clean up is a breeze and only requires that you dispose of the used pod. The great thing about these machines, apart from their convenience, is the variety of different coffee types and flavors that are available. There are even decaffeinated pods available for those that don’t want the extra stimulation.
Of course, there are other coffee makers available and they are easily found by doing a bit of online research. Sites like Amazon are great, as they contain unique user reviews for many of the products they sell. These reviews are written in an unbiased context and can be extremely helpful if you’re the least bit indecisive about what to purchase. In terms of how much to spend on a coffee machine, the average cost is between $30 and $50, though there are machines available on either side of this price range. The important thing to consider is not the cost of the machine itself, but the quality of the beans you are using. Brewing a fantastic cup of coffee is a difficult task if you’re using stale beans.
You should also consider purchasing a quality burr grinder to go with your new coffee machine. Burr grinders provide a consistent grind and won’t produce undesirable dust, which can impart bitterness to the final cup. Happy shopping!
Cage for Your Pet Chinchilla

There are several things to consider when selecting your pet chinchilla’s cage. Remember, although they are small animals, chinchillas are very active creatures. In fact, they can jump as high as five feet above their own heads. While you probably do not want to give them that much space, any cage you house them in will need to be roomy enough so they can exercise and play in it. This is very important in helping to keep your pet physically and psychologically healthy. Adding several small shelves for them to jump on is also a good idea. They will also need a separate corner to go to the bathroom away from where they eat and sleep.
A sturdy frame made of wood with wire mesh walls is best. However, the chinchilla cage should not have a wire floor. Not only is this uncomfortable for small animals, but can actually cause sores to develop on their tender paws. Ideally, cages should be made so you can provide your pet with comfortable beds of sand, wood chips, sawdust shavings or straw and come with removable trays for the bedding and litter to allow for easy cleaning without having to take the animal out of the cage.
The doors should be placed in such a way that you can open them to feed your chinchilla, but at the same time prevent them from escaping when you do. If building your own cage you might even consider making two separate doorways, a small one for feeding and a larger one so you can have easy access to your pet whenever you want to take it out for any reason. This can save you from headaches down the road. While cages need to be narrow enough to fit through doorways, larger ones can be placed on rollers so they can be moved easily.
