Proper lighting is a very important factor when it comes to photography and will make the difference between a great photo and a horrible photo. The camera has an in- built light meter which measures how much light is reflected into the camera. It is important for the photographer to know how to control the light to get those great shots. This is achieved by understanding the mechanisms of the camera which work to control the light, the influence of the ambient light and how to manipulate it to the photo’s advantage and how to use artificial lighting to light a photo whether in a studio or outside the studio.
Some of the things to consider when it comes to digital photography lighting, include the light’s angle ingoing to the frame, they type of shadows that the photographer wants and whether they will use the fill-in flash to light the photography subject when the background is very bright. The angle of the light can be used to create special effects, for instance, when it is angled on one side of the face and creates a shadow effect on another. Also, the angle of the light creates a coloring effect or a silhouette effect. Lighting can be manipulated to get that great photo even when shooting at night. The effects which can be created include lights in motion, silhouettes or pictures in the moonlight.
The shutter is that part of the camera which determines the amount of light that will enter the camera through its speed. A more rapid shutter speed means that less light will be let into the camera and exposure will be decrease thereby making the image quite dark. The aperture determines the lighting range.
A good photographer should possess excellent lighting techniques. Professionals use many types of expensive lighting equipment but for those who are just starting out and do not own a large studio, there are other far less expensive means of lighting such as desk lamps or halogen work lights. It is advisable to avoid fluorescent lighting since it tends to require a lot of color correction. Tinted lights also present the same problem.
A photographer who has mastered digital photography lighting is a photographer who has mastered the art of photography. Lighting is extremely important, not just to illuminate the subject but also to create those special effects that will make the photograph to stand out.
