If you are looking for a black rug, no doubt you will have already thought of the obvious things like what style of rug, what size and what shape will go with your room and you have probably considered your budget. However, there are a few things you may not have thought about. Here are some of the less obvious issues surrounding black rugs to consider.
1. Plain versus Patterned
If you have decided to buy a plain black rug, it is important to be aware of the disadvantages. Pure black and a short pile rug is a combination which will show every crumb or piece of fluff. As a result you will have to vacuum your rug much more frequently than if you buy a long pile shag rug or choose a patterned rug. It may not matter to you, however, if you detest cleaning, it is as well to be aware of this issue in advance.
2. Synthetic versus Natural Fibers
If you choose a rug in a solid color such as black you will also have to make sure that the quality of the rug is good as that is the only thing that will be noticed in a solid block of color. If you choose a synthetic rug (which is generally of lower quality and cheaper than a wool or leather one) make sure that the color is true and fade resistant – you want a black rug not one which will fade to gray in a few months. Also, whatever rug you choose make sure that it is heavy and will lie well on the floor. Although quality in a black patterned rug will be less obvious than in a plain one, a thin wrinkled rug does not look good on your floor any way you look at it.
3. Accent versus Background
It is easy for black to “take over” the room decoration if you are not careful, and if you are looking for an accent rug that is not such a bad thing. However, if you want other items in the room to take central stage be careful that your black rug stays in the background and in this case a plain rug might be best. You can reduce the impact of a patterned rug by including other colors from the rug in accessories for your room so that they draw the eye too.
