Some art paintings are awful and I cannot make head or tail of them at all.  I think of an art painting as something pleasant to look at with a good subject or discernable event on the canvas. I love landscapes and flower paintings but I also like an old fashioned oil painting showing old villages or cottages. What I dislike in the art world are those abstract pictures which do nothing at all for me. I don’t know what they mean or what was going on in the artists head when he (or she) painted them.

I pay frequent visits to galleries and I view all types of art including installations, sculpture, stoneware, oils, watercolors and many others but I have thus far failed to enjoy or understand abstract pictures and paintings. One abstract painting I saw was just a blank canvas ready for the artist to make an impression but seemingly the artist was making a statement with the work, whatever that means. I was told afterwards that the painting actually had a small dot on it but I had failed to see it.

Some of these abstract pictures sell very well (for millions of dollars) and are painted by well known artists but the fact remains that nobody has a clue as to what the painting means. Maybe this is the intention of the artist and we are to be left guessing Friends of mine who are also art lovers have tried to explain the abstract concept of art to me but they have failed as it just sounds like ‘art speak’. Art speak excludes the common person from the art world and is full of meaningless phrases and facts which are ridiculous. I have many paintings on my walls but none of them are what could be described as abstract pieces.
