Furniture for Outdoor Living

Occasionally, we find ourselves with an afternoon with nothing to do, what would be better than taking a book or magazine and a tall glass of iced tea to the patio and spending a relaxing afternoon doing absolutely nothing?  That could become a reality if you spend some time and imagination planning an outdoor retreat that is comfortable and peaceful.

The first thing to contemplate is furniture.  There are many options to consider when choosing furniture for your patio and deck.  Firstly, take into consideration the size of the outdoor space; you want furniture that will allow for traffic flow and provide seating for family and guests.  Comfort is the next thing to consider, do you like to recline and read a book?  If so, then a quality chaise lounge may be a good investment.  Do you enjoy having dinner parties and outdoor barbeques?  Then a patio dining table and chairs would be a wise purchase.  There are many configurations of furniture available, in many sizes and materials.

Outdoor furniture is constructed to withstand all types of weather.  The fiber filling of cushions are water resistant and resist mildew.  The frames are made of materials that weather all climates and the fabrics are UV protected.  You can keep your patio looking like new much longer if you choose furniture specifically built for outdoor use.  Teak, wrought iron, wicker and rattan, and aluminum are examples of outdoor furniture materials.

Even though you have a certain amount of decorating latitude when designing your patio, keep in mind that the patio will much more aesthetically pleasing if you carry out the prevailing theme of the architecture. If your home is contemporary in style then the patio should be decorated in a style the complements that contemporary style.  This doesn’t mean that you cannot reflect your own personal style in the furnishings you choose for your patio.

After the furniture has been chosen, add accessories to make the outdoor room feel like an extension of your home.  This can be done through lighting, plants and even something as simple as a round outdoor rug or carpet.  The carpet can add color or texture and make the outdoor room seem complete.  Plants add color and give the outdoor area a natural feel.  Lights are important simply because they allow you to enjoy your outdoor space after sunset and create a feeling of intimacy and warmth. With just a little forethought and planning you can create an outdoor area where you will want to spend many hours.
