Futon Sofa Bed Extravaganza

The fanciest futon sofa bed I ever saw was quite outrageous.  Perhaps I was used to living simply, but I’d never seen a regular sofa with so many gadgets and hidden spaces.  This futon sofa bed was upholstered with gold leather fabric that nearly glowed under the lights.  The seat and back cushions had an plush soft pillow running across it, for added comfort.  Then, the sofa pulled out into a full size bed that would comfortably sleep two.  Underneath the seat bed was a storage compartment; perfect for extra pillows and quilts.  Here’s the cincher.  This futon sofa bed had armrests, from which emerged hidden cup holders for your coffee when you sat or your popcorn when you lay watching a movie.  Say “wow.”

Futons Make Great Guest Beds

If you are moving into a new house or apartment, and find yourself with an extra room, you may desire to turn it into a guest room for out-of-town visitors.  While this is a common practice among upper-class families, many younger singles or couples may find they don’t have the freedom to spend thousands of dollars on furniture for a guest room.

For this reason, a Futon Bed has become a popular option for guest bedrooms.  The word “futon” is actually “bedding” in Japanese and originally the beds were used in small apartments.  Today you can find a futon bed of any quality or design.  A good place to start is at a local Target store, or discount furniture retailer.  With a bit of searching you can also find futon covers to match any décor you may have.

Futon Bed Frames

Depending upon where you live on the globe, you will have very different ideas regarding the futon beds frame that you are sleeping on.  The type we are used to have armrests, storage, shelving and even headboards.  These are not like the traditional Japanese futon mattress frames.

In Japan, the futon mattress consists of two parts that are placed on the floor on tatami mats.  These mats are made of rice straw, traditionally, but now can be found with compressed wood and Styrofoam.  This is hardly the futon frame you know here.  But, with differing needs come different uses.  We use our futons for both sleeping – mostly guests – whereas in Japan, the futon is used as a primary sleeping arrangement.  Sure, you can find a more sturdy and ‘permanent’ bed frame in Japan.  However, what you will find is that these bed frames are usually much more simple in design with the frame being essentially flat and made of unfinished wood.  The wood will be finely sanded and crafted, but not typically painted.  The traditional look would be of a cedar or other locally harvested wood source.
