It has been a long time since college.  And, for most, that is when they had their first experience with a futon mattress.  Whether they had one themselves or bought one for their child in college, that is when the affordable futon usually makes its first appearance.  Now, times have changed.  A futon today is much more than a cheap way to crash at night after a long evening of ‘socializing’ shall we say.  There are still very affordable options with regard to the materials that make up a futon, but there are also more creature comforts as well.

Getting the more luxurious additions, like memory foam or coiled springs, even natural latex futon mattresses are now ever more popular and abundant.  The futon still doesn’t grace the covers of the finer home magazines, but for comfort reasons it easily could.  These more ‘upscale’ features have made the futon on par with the more traditional style of mattress choices.  Now, even ‘adults’ can enjoy sleeping on the new styles of futon mattresses.

On the other hand, a japanese futon mattress is a traditional type of bed that is still used in Japan today. It is essentially a padded and comfortable matt that is place on the floor. In the morning, it is rolled away and put into a cupboard so that there is more room for day to day living. This is important in Japan as space is at a premium.
