Leica S2 – the Best 35m Digital SLR

If you are looking for the best possible 35mm digital SLR then you could do a lot worse than look at the 37.5 megapixel  Leica S2 . Many professionals believe that Leica make the best 35mm cameras and have done for a long time, better than Nikon and Canon, and as a result more expensive.

The Leica S2 is Leica’s newest offering in the field of digital SLRs. It has been designed to offer the quality of a medim-format camera such as a Hasselblad but to be as compact as a 35mm camera.

The best digital SLR at the moment is generally considered to be the Nikon D3, which has a 24 megapixel sensor and costs around $8000. The Leica S2, will be launched in the summer fo 2009 with a sensor offering 37.5 megapixels. It wil cost somewhere in the region of $20,000.

It has been designed to be fully weather-sealed, with a quality that is more than enough for studio work, whilst at the same time being light enough to be carried on outdoor photographic expeditions. The Leica S2 is aimed at the professional or pro-am market and according to Leica is a “tool not a toy”.

The medium-format cameras it will be competing with also cost in the region of $22,000 but weigh a ton.
