Shopping for Maternity Clothes

When you become pregnant you need to account that you’re not going to fit into your regular clothes for much longer! Different women develop at different rates but you’re probably going to be wearing mostly maternity clothes from your second trimester onwards. You can get some additional use out of clothes by buying styles that you can wear after having the baby such as empire line tops and dresses.

In terms of underwear, a maternity bra is essential and probably one of the first items you’ll need to buy. Your breasts will start increasing in size and needing more support from early in the first trimester and this can often be one of the first signs that you’re pregnant. You’ll probably go through at least a couple of sizes during your pregnancy and then need nursing bras after you give birth.

For day to day clothes, choose comfy stretchy fabrics. You can usually get away with wearing leggings or yoga pants and long t-shirts for quite a while without resorting to specialist maternity clothes. Dresses with an empire line can be layered over leggings or worn on their own and can also be worn when you’re not pregnant. For smarter gear for work and going out you’ll probably need at least a few maternity items – look out for sales or buy second hand to keep the costs down.

Another great item to have in your wardrobe is a maternity swimsuit. Swimming is a greatly recommended exercise during pregnancy and you’ll need a specially designed maternity suit once your belly starts to get big. You can buy these from most shops that have a maternity range or from specialist suppliers online.

Try not to go overboard when shopping as remember that you’ll be wearing this clothing for a few months at most. Take advantage of sales or borrow from friends and look out for bargains on online auction sites like ebay.
