There are quite a lot of ways in which your ceiling can be damaged from water and it can go unnoticed for a considerable period of time, turning a small problem into a much larger one. There are some things to look for to detect ceiling water damage such as a yellow stain that appears on the ceiling.

If you catch the problem early enough you can do the repairs yourself, although the first step is the important one, namely to fix the leak that caused the water damage in the first place. By not carrying out this step, the damage will simply reappear after you have repaired the ceiling.

Thoroughly cleaning and drying the ceiling will be part of the process and possibly a new coat of paint after an oil-based primer has been applied. Check carefully for mold or mildew growth too, washing down the area to kill any spores.
